Montaner

It can already be seen from the Veneto plain, glistening in the afternoon sun, with its white bell tower rising above the woods of Cansiglio.

Montaner di Sàrmede is a fascinating place steeped in history, strategically situated at an altitude of around 350 metres above the Treviso plain. Here, where the karst terrain of the mountains allows water to rise to the surface, an important settlement has developed over the centuries, inhabited by prominent families and communities.

In the Middle Ages, it was from these very hills that one of the oldest and most famous dynasties of the Marca Trevigiana originated: the da Camino family, known at the time as ‘da Montanara’, in reference to the original name of the village, before they moved to the Opitergina area.

 

On clear days, from the village square, you can admire one of the most breathtaking views in the Veneto region: the vista stretches all the way to Venice, the Adriatic Sea and the Euganean Hills, over 90 kilometres away.

 

In the autumn and winter months, Montaner offers spectacular sunsets, which bathe the village streets in shades of pink, red, orange and purple, creating an atmosphere that seems to hover between nature and poetry.

 

The best way to experience all this is on foot or by bike, along the nature trails leading from Montaner towards the Cansiglio plateau, or by following the forest and pastoral paths that gently wind their way through the surrounding hills. The scenic provincial road linking the centre of Sàrmede to Fregona also offers glimpses of rare beauty, ideal for those who love to explore the Veneto landscape at a leisurely pace.

 

Montaner comprises several historic hamlets — Borgo Ranè, Borgo Martin, Borgo Gava, Borgo Moneghe and Borgo Canalet — each with its own distinct character, linked to the names of the families who once lived there or to the distinctive features of the area.

These are small hamlets to be explored at a leisurely pace, strolling through ancient courtyards and enchanting views, perhaps stopping for an aperitif or lunch in the establishments that preserve the authenticity of the local food and wine.

In Montaner, the local area reveals itself through its history, landscape and welcoming culture: a place where every step is a discovery and every glance becomes art.
