Saint Barbara
If you hear 21 shots echoing in the sky, don’t be alarmed! It means you’re listening to the annual celebrations in Montaner di Sarmede to commemorate Saint Barbara, the patron saint of miners. The 21 shots represent the citizens who died while working in the mines, especially abroad (and in Belgium in particular).
This is a deeply felt and celebrated celebration in Montaner, as many of its residents were miners or, at least, are the children and grandchildren of miners—people who, following the end of the two world wars, found no other solution than to emigrate to ensure a better future for their loved ones.
This celebration is an opportunity not only to remember, but also to come together and celebrate with the community.

March of the snails

The event has been held annually on May 1st for almost fifty years. The Montaner Snail Marchers’ Group regularly organizes two or three different routes, divided according to individual ability (6, 12, and sometimes 18 kilometers). These routes allow runners to enjoy the cultural, architectural, and scenic beauty of the area in a festive atmosphere, along with many others.
For those who prefer a more athletic performance, this march lives up to expectations: the longest route usually reaches 1,000 meters above sea level, taking athletes up to the Cansiglio plateau, guaranteeing both effort and satisfaction.
Twinning with the town of Cocumont
Since 2017, the Municipality of Sarmede has been twinned with Cocumont, a French municipality of 987 inhabitants located in the Lot-et-Garonne department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.
In recent years, exchanges have been frequent and very productive, including the receipt of European funding for the CIRCLE project (funded by the Europe for Citizens program), which organized a four-day meeting on the “innovative” theme of circular citizenship, linked to migration and the valorization of diversity.
But why Cocumont?
Both in the post-war period and in the second, many of our fellow citizens found work in this part of France, so much so that today it is not uncommon to find surnames typical of Sarmede in this area, such as Gallo or Da Ros. This partnership is destined to last a long time.
Spiriti Liberi Festival
All motorcycle and rock music enthusiasts know that between May and June each year, the Festival degli Spiriti Liberi (Free Spirits Festival) is held at the Sarmede sports field (Via Fraccas, 5). This fun-filled event offers good food, excellent live rock music, and a great party atmosphere.
The event, now in its 22nd year (2025), attracts enthusiasts from across the region and beyond. Admission is free for bikers of all types.

Chestnut Festival in Montaner
Every year, the Pro Fest Association of Montaner di Sarmede organizes the Chestnut Festival on the last weekend of October, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2027!
A food and wine stand awaits you, offering local specialties, while musical groups will enliven your evenings. Outside, there will be plenty of rides and attractions for the little ones, including a charity raffle for the parish nursery school, a market in the square, and, of course, delicious chestnuts!
