The Col Oliver Loop Trail
The path leading from Montaner di Sarmede to Col Oliver is beautiful, but rather long. It follows the Sentiero Pagnoca (CAI no. 1061) to the end of the climb, at a place called “Colon” (altitude: 850 metres above sea level).
From there, follow the path on the left which, leaving the main route and climbing gently but steadily, leads first to Malga Cavril and then to Col Oliver, situated in the heart of the Cansiglio Forest at an altitude of just over 1,000 metres. The walking time to this point is approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Once at Col Oliveri, you can enjoy a functional space, restored in 1994 by volunteers from the Pro Loco of Sarmede, which also features a designated recreational area. The area comprises a 100-square-metre open-air shelter with an adjoining barbecue, and a covered kiosk that serves as a covered refreshment area.
The entire facility can be booked via this link and is also accessible by car from the Piana del Cansiglio. For the return journey, we recommend descending towards the Parco dei Carbonai and then on to Col Alt, following the path that leads to Monte Castelir (this is the same route recommended for returning from the Sentiero Pagnoca).
From there, continue down towards Borgo Val, from where you can easily reach the church of Montaner, the starting point, in under 20 minutes. Alternatively, you can descend via Villaggio Paradiso, between Col dei Buoi and Col dei Scios, passing through “lama vecchia” and following the concrete road with its numerous hairpin bends back to the Sentiero Pagnoca.
Duration: the entire hike can take up to 6 or 7 hours.
